A novel system for the harvest of poplar for Medium Rotation Coppice. Felling and windrowing within the inter-row and chipping in dynamic phase. The Consiglio per
la ricerca e sperimentazione in agricoltura, in cooperation with Spapperi company, projected an innovative yard suitable for the harvest of five-years old poplar grown in Medium Rotation Coppice (MRC). The system allows the MRC harvesting in two
different phases: cutting and windrowing of trees parallel to the row followed by harvesting and chipping of windrows. It is formed by a cut-windrower and a self-propelled chipper with a forward pick-up. The harvester, semi-trailed by a 95 kW (at least) tractor, is able to work on plants with a maximum diameter of 300 mm. The plant, cut by mean of a disc saw, is moved thanks to a double pincers with variable positioning that provides to grasp and release the plants within the windrow. These are laid in position parallel with the advancing direction of the tractor but in the opposite way. The windrow is then harvested by the
self-propelled machinery (260 kW), equipped with a pick-up header including the chipper unit. The comminution takes place in dynamic phase, directly in the windrow, and the chipped wood is offloaded inside the rear body of the self-propelled chipper or in trailers towed by tractors.
