In Italy SRF is normally harvested between December and March so a long period storage is necessary, at least to have the water content reduced to an acceptable value for boilers feeding. Nowadays the transport cost control pushes towards the production of chips. A test to evaluate the energy-wise behaviour of different storage systems was carried out in Northern Italy. The piles represented four different stocking methods: the first pile was ventilated pile, the second was formed with simply cumulated material; the third was covered with a special non woven fabric; the last one was compacted by a tractor. The poplars were harvested and chipped using a Claas Jaguar 850, mounting a specific head for SRF. During the storage period temperature, rainfall, humidity and solar radiation were registered and were monitorated temperature changes at different level. When the piles were opened elementary analyses were carried out (moisture content, ash content, and heating value were measured). SRF fuel has a low economic value, so it is important to reduce losses in harvesting, handling, stocking and utilization. The best method is the non woven fabric covered pile. The compacted pile showed a good result compared to the uncovered one.
