La jatropha una pianta multifunzionale utilizzata anche per la produzione di bio-diesel. Tra i sottoprodotti generati dalla sua coltivazione, il legno ottenibile dagli interventi di potatura rappresenta una risorsa ancora poco sfruttata

Jatropha is a multipurpose energy crop usually cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical climate. The oil is commonly used as biodiesel but few studies have reported information about the utilization of the wood to produce energy. Usually there are about 2,500 Jatropha trees per hectare with a production of about 3 t ha-1 y-1 of woody biomass of pruning. In addition Jatropha trees are commonly cut down to a height of 45 cm ones every 10 years, with a production of 80 t ha-1 of dry matter woody biomass. The use of this biomass should be better studied. Jatropha woody biomass was collected in a experimental field in Morocco within the JatroMed project. Chemical and physical characteristics of the Jatropha woody biomass have been carried out in the laboratory of the CRA-ING institute: Water and ash content as well as the heating value and the concentrations of C, H, N, S have been analyzed. All the measurements were conduced according to standards UNI EN ISO. The research focused on the evaluation of the potential use of Jatropha pruning for energy production, and it represents a resource of critical data, useful for future studies and potential business ventures. Moisture, ash content and ash melting point permitted to evaluate the potential utilization of Jatropha biomass woody in boiler. The elemental analysis and the heating value allowed to determine the wood characterization and the energetic performance of the wood. The chemical and physical characterization of the Jatropha woody biomass from pruning has permitted to clarify the potentialities and the limits of this resource to produce energy.
