Electronic olfactometric discrimination of lemon contamination from Penicillium spp during storage

The most commori and serious diseases which occur in ltaly during storage and marketing of citrus fruit are green and blue moulds incited respectively by Peniciltium digitatum ?iftd P. italicunr. These diseases can cause significant economic lo-sses during storage andLansport. Mature fruits (primofiore crop) from Citrus limon (L.) Burm "Femminello siracusano" were used in this "*p".i*"nt. Sound and sound plus infected fiuitÀ were allocated respectively in two different Plexiglas air isolated cabinets (cóntrot vs cabinetc ontainingi nfectedf ruit). The percentageso f infectedf ruit utilized were 1 and SVo.Thes oundf ruit usedt o fill the shelves of cabinets were previously treated with the fungicide Imazalil (1000 ppm a.i.) to avoid mould spreading and the consecutivei ncreasingi n the percentageo f infection. Measureso f volatiles compoundsw ere carried out in the atmosphereo f cabinet for four days after each percentage of infected fruit was fansferred. Exposing peach fruits to UV-light significantly decreased decay of inoculated peach fruits. As regards, exposure time for 6 min gave the best results in suppressing the postharvestd eciy of peaches.S light differencesi n weight loss valuesw ere detectedi n fruits inoculatedw ith -R.s tolonifer and èxposed to UV at difîerent exposure periods compared with uninocslated fuuits or those inoculated with 8. cinerea. Exposing inoculated fruits with each of ihe testeà fungi to Uv-irradiation slightly affected the percentage of soluble solids content' On the other hand, exposingh ealthy fruits for 24 min. significantly decreaseds oluble solids contenta s comparedw ith untreatedf ruits or thosee xposedfo r 6 min.
