Although the current interest in biomass potential productivity from riparian habitats is greater than in the past, very few studies have analyzed the potential chain that could involve the use of riparian biomass for energy purposes. Objective of the present contribute was the comparison of two machineries for the chopping of the spontaneous plants of giant reed (Arundo donax L.) growing alongside the river banks and the analysis of the product obtained in order to evaluate its suitability for the use in biorefinery. The study was carried out in a land reclamation authority of central Italy in areas where the giant reed vegetation was prevalent. A hydraulic forestry mulcher with hammers, mounted on a track excavator, and a shredder with knives, on a self-propelled machine were compared. The implements were used in a single or a double pass. For both systems the main qualitative aspects (particle size, moisture, ash content) of the product obtained were evaluated. The results have evidenced as the product obtained from a shredder mounting knives fulfill better the technical requirements in terms of bulk density and particle size distribution, performing both one or two passages. However, due to the relatively the frequent presence of oversize and/or undersize particles the feedstock appeared acceptable for industrial plants. The study allowed to acquire precious indications about the identification of the mechanization lines suitable for the handling of riparian vegetation of Arundo and to make a first evaluation of the characteristics of the product aimed at its energy use.
