The harvesting systems for five-years old poplar plantations requires very often the use of specialized forest machineries such as harvester, feller, forwarder and chipper. Usually, after felling, the working phases consist of extraction, stacking and chipping; these determine the raising of costs, especially when the area to be harvested has a small size. In order to introduce technological innovations for medium rotation forestry harvesting, the Engineering unit of the Agricultural Research Council (CRA-ING) of Monterotondo (Rome, Italy) has developed a prototype of cut windrower capable to cut and place the plants, along inter-rows, parallel to the progress of the tractor but in the opposite direction. The prototype is semi-trailed by a 95 kW tractor (at least). Thereafter, collection and chipping of windrowed biomass is accomplished directly in the inter-row with a self-propelled chipper equipped with a pick-up head. The operative working capacity was 0.25 ha h-1 whereas the operative production was 48 t h-1.
