Abstract in English:
The Agricultural European Policy aims to introduce energy crops in arable fields, therefore it is necessary to develop agro-energetic chains for arid environments. Agriculture engineering research is fundamental to provide optimal technical solutions, from the implant to the harvest, especially in order to decrease the logistic cost. For this reason the Italian Ministry of Agriculture funded the Project “Filere AgroEnergetiche nel Sud Italia - FAESI” coordinated by CRA-ING for introduction the cardoon and other crops in arid conditions of South Italy. The sustainability of the energy crops can be better achieved by the full valorisation of all component of the plants. In this crop it is possible to obtain biomass for energy, seeds for oil and pappus for fine cellulose. For this reason the authors designed and developed a head suitable to separate the seed from lignocellulosic biomass and pappus. The aim of the paper is to the performances of a combine equipped with three different heads (cardoon head Cra-Ing; head traditional for wheat, head modified for wheat) during the tests carried out in two different Italian regions (Calabria and Sardinia). Trough the traditional cardoon harvesting system is not possible to separate in the field the different plant components. The cardoon’s head, developed by Cra Ing, allows to obtain more products from a cardoon without damaging cultivation. Trial results conducted in the two environments highlights the successful of combine performance whit innovative Cra-Ing head for cardoon. The previously developed heads was equipped with cutting system based on rows, resulting inappropriate by flooding due to offshoots irregular alignment along rows. After replacing the cut system mentioned above with a full-length mowing/cutter bar, the reduction of capitula losses has achieved 86.0% than to the traditional head for wheat, while with the modified head for wheat capitula losses was 59.2%.
