The conservation tillage system represent an alternative to traditional soil tillage. Through the reduction of soil erosion and compaction, the preservation and improvement of the natural fertility, these practices, based on natural soil covering, significantly contribute to the reduction of energetic, mechanics and working inputs, keeping satisfactory levels of productivity. Among them, soil tillage without inverting, adopted in place of deep ploughing, allows to prepare the surface for refining operations also by means of passive implements, with consequent energy savings. It can be executed by means of the subsoilers, machines that operate a deep vertical shatter and the lifting of compact soil, thus contributing to restore its structure and porosity, avoiding layers mixing and aiding the absorption of the nutrients and the growth of the roots.
The Agricultural Machinery Testing Centre (CRA-ING) developed a test methodology and a series of devices and instruments aimed at evaluating the operative performances and the qualitative aspects of the work of the machines for soil tillage according to the requirements of the international standards. They have been applied in field tests on three subsoilers. The test results, reported in this paper, provided accurate information about the operative performances of the machines, allowing their comparison.
