Pathogenic F. oxysporum strains can cause vascular wilt or root rot in over 100 plant species,
among which are several economically important crops. In spite of the broad host range of
the species as a whole, individual strains usually infect only a single or a few plant species.
However, breeding for resistance is complicated when no dominant resistance locus has
been identified as in melon against FOM race 1,2. The expression of genes involved in
pathogenicity of FOM race 1 and 1,2 were comparatively investigated in grafted melon
plants in both compatible and incompatible combination (i.e., either in presence or absence
of wilting-death symptoms) by qPCR. Genes selected were associated with the main aspects
of pathogenesis mainly signal transduction, cell wall degrading enzymes, transcription
factors, stress response, virulence. Some important host genes implied in defence responses
were included in this comparative study.
