In recent years the comfort and the preservation of the health of the operators became central issues in the evolution of agricultural machinery and led to the introduction of devices aimed at improving working conditions. Thereby, for instance, the presence of air conditioner, soundproof cab and driver seat suspension became normal on agricultural tractors. The vibrations are one of the most complex issues to deal with, being determined by the characteristics and interaction of elements such as tyres, axles, mainframe, cab and seat suspension. In this respect, manufacturers are trying to improve their products, even integrating these elements with new devices such as the automated self-levelling cabs, aimed at maintaining the correct position of the operator during heavy operations for the vertebral column (i.e. slope). One of these underwent tillage tests to determine its operating limits, the best efficiency conditions in maintaining the cab horizontal, the speed of intervention, any effects on the levels of vibration during the work. From the mechanical point of view, the device demonstrated to work well under slope conditions that do not exceed the operating limits of the system, maintaining the horizontality of the cabin through progressive and bumpless adjustments. Tilling in the plain, in conjunction with its actuation, it has been also observed a certain reduction of the vibration level compared to the traditional condition. The tillage tests on a hill on high and variable slopes provided less supportive results because of the continuous, automatic on / off device due to exceeding the slope limit of the system. This resulted in an increase of the discomfort of the operator (evidenced by the measured values of the accelerations), who preferred to exclude the device and work in the traditional way. The system could be usefully applied in hilly conditions, working according to the level lines, or straight down, when the slope of the front of the hill is not too variable. In conclusion, in some conditions the device is capable of maintaining the cab horizontal avoiding the rachis to assume incorrect positions (eg. curvature of the lumbar region), increasing the level of comfort. Any positive effects on health could be assessed following medical studies that, in the evaluation of the vibration levels, should consider the specificity of agricultural work conditions and take into due account of the actual contribution of each axial component.
