Diseases of chili pepper grown in central Italy The paper reports the results of a survey carried out in Autumn 2013 in some chili pepper cultivations aimed at identifying the main pathogens. Many plants belonging to different species of the genus Capsicum were examined by laboratory tests for fungi and virus presence according to the observed symptoms in field. Fusarium spp., Verticillium dalhiae, Alternaria spp. and Colletotrichum spp. were identified as agent of plant wilt, leaf spot and anthracnose, respectively. Several viruses were also identified (Pepper mild mottle virus, Potato virus Y, Tomato spotted wilt virus, Alfalfa mosaic virus and Broad bean wilt virus 1) and were associated to different leaf symptomathology. Although all these pathogens are present in Italy causing severe damage to many vegetable solanaceous and other important crops, it is essential to prevent the spread of the diseases through a strict control of the sanitary status of seeds, seedlings, plant for planting and of soil.
