Inhalable dust emission in the mechanical harvesting of hazelnuts: first comparative test

Workers who perform the hazelnuts operations of mechanized harvesting are exposed to the
harmful effects of inhalation of dust that is raised by machinery.
This paper aims to point out the possibility of reducing the dust, including respirable dust,
emitted into the atmosphere during mechanical harvesting of hazelnuts by use of a new
device developed at the Tuscia University installed on harvesters. The effectiveness of the
system was evaluated by sampling the dust released into the environment (environmental
sampling) and dust that concerns the driver (personal sampling).
The results reveal that the dust concentration decreases significantly by using the suction
machine equipped with the device for the reduction of dust compared to the standard suction
The ability to reduce the dust is greater than 70% in the case of sampling in ambient air, and
over 60% in the sampling operator. Future developments in the work include the
determination of free crystalline silica (SLC), which can be a risk factor for the workers of the
sector and for the people living in area’s cultivation of the hazelnut.
