It is well known that from bioenergy is required a relevant contribution to achieve the European target by 2020 expected in the climate and energy package. However, the bio-economic European strategy based on the hierarchical use of biomass could limit the energy crops utilization, but at the same time can encourage the use of by-products. Among the agricultural by-products suitable for energy production, pruning are considered a very interesting resource. Several studies focused on the availability assessment of pruning and its energy potential. These studies were carried out at different spatial levels (European, national, regional, local), in different years, and with different methodologies. In general, these estimations use a statistical or spatial approach (GIS), or a combination of both. Usually, these studies employ indices where the production of pruning is correlated to the cultivated area, the main product, and the single plant (tons per ha, pruning to product ratio, kg per plant). The amount of annual available pruning will depend by the species and cultivars as well as by the aspects related to the cultivated area (e.g. shape and planting system, agricultural practices, soil and climatic conditions, pruning and collection systems). Therefore, the use of specific territorial indices determine a higher accuracy of the estimation. The main goal of this work is to select, through a bibliographic analysis, the indices used in the different European realities in order to obtain an updated and representative estimation, referring to a specific year and considering the same geographical detail. So far, pruning biomass is an unexploited resource, but it could represent an extra income for the European farmers. This work, provides a more precise estimation of the pruning biomass available in Europe and an important support for the development of projects based on the use of such resources.
