CRA-ING developed a dynamometric, single-axle cart aimed at testing agricultural tyres called Mobile Test Bench (MTB). It allows to test, theoretically, tyres of all model and size and is characterized by the possibility of continuously adjusting the test parameters. The test control system can alternatively operate the adjustment of the force of traction or of the slip, so that each test is performed maintaining constant the desired value of force or slip. The MTB also provides a continuous monitoring of the actual dynamic load on the tyres. The static (and dynamic) load on the tyres can be adjusted as well by varying the mass of the ballast. The MTB underwent a series of tests aimed at comparing the interactions occurring between soil surface and the same tyres model mounted on when the MTB and on a tractor. The tests simultaneously covered a couple of tyres mounted on the MTB and a second couple of the same tyre model mounted on the tractor that pulled the MTB and aimed at comparing the performances of the two couples of tyres under the same traction force conditions, providing information about slip and dynamic load behaviours in the two operating modes and on the possibility of using it for the tests on tyre performances. The results evidenced the capability of the MTB to guarantee repeatable test conditions, providing precise and reliable measurements and allowing the comparison among the performances of different tyres. The tests on tyre-soil interaction and on dynamic load behaviour of MTB compared with the tractor, confirmed the hypothesis that the relative movements and velocities of tyre and track surface are similar, in both cases, under normal conditions of use, thus allowing to reliably estimate the tyre performances on tractors from those provided by the MTB. The MTB can also be used both in rolling resistance tests and braking tests, taking care that the tyre rolling direction and the travel direction are the same.
