The production of energy from biomass has considerable potentials both in Italy and in Europe as an instrument for diversification of energy sources, mitigation of the environmental effects produced by conventional energy sources, as well as for the economic relaunching of rural areas. Among the resources potentially utilizable for
energy purposes, a primary role is played by the pruning residues of tree crops.
However, the greater part of farmers eliminate the pruning residues by fireing them because of the excessive costs of their collection and handling. After testing in the field all the pruning harvesters manufactured in Italy and having investigated their limits in the various operational environments, the technical characteristics required of an ideal
harvester were identified and, accordingly, a design was produced.
