In this research, field tests on different soil tillage operations for reforestation aimed to assess quality of work of machinery and to verify performance of the tractors were carried out on soil in Central Italy. Machineries used during field tests were: tractor mounted combined machine: scarifier, hoeing machine, for double-depth plough (deep scarifying and more shallow soil mixer) and furrow opener; mounted rotary plough driven by the tractor p.t.o; tractor mounted chisel plough equipped with 5 anchor teeth perpendiculars to the forward speed direction; tractor trailed multi-furrow plough equipped with helicoidally mouldboards as a Control one. The above mentioned machineries were mounted or trailed by: a medium power metal tracked tractor (13000 kg of mass and 114 kW of engine power); and a a high power wheeled tractor with hydro-mechanical power transmission (10100 kg of mass with ballast and 167 kW of engine power). The combined machine and the rotary plough were mounted both on the tracked (coded TT) that on the wheeled tractor (coded WT) while the chisel plough was mounted only on WT and the three-furrow plough was trailed only by TT. Field tests were conducted on a silty clay soil with permanent meadow. From the comparison of the different treatments it emerged that regarding soil surface covered by residue and engine power output (kW), the differences founded were statistically significant between different implements and mouldboard plough in favour of conservative tillage machineries. Concerning quality of work and performance of the machineries coupled with two tractors, differences founded were not statistically significant regarding: work width and work depth, thickness of tilled soil layer and worked section. Concerning: forward speed, real work capacity, unitary fuel consumption (kg ha-1), mean energy demand per volume of tilled soil [kWh (1000 m3)-1] differences were statistically significant in favour of the machineries coupled with wheeled tractor with continuous variations of the forward speed.
