Germination ability of the rhizomes of giant reed (Arundo donax L.). Study on the size limits of the propagation material. Giant reed (Arundo donax L.) is a perennial rhizomatous grass currently pointed out as an alternative crop for the bioenergy production. Arundo is propagated by vegetative cuttings or by rhizomes. This latter is the solution allows higher margins of reliability for the successful cultivation in a short time. The establishment of a plantation represents one of main voice of the cultivation costs and influences the future productivity of the crop. Therefore, CRA-ING has conducted a study in order to gain useful information about the germination ability of the rhizomes of different sizes and to evaluate the adaptability of the crop to the soil and climatic conditions of Central Italy The research carried out at Monterotondo has shown that the giant reed can be propagated by rhizomes smaller than 10 cm. Furthermore, the data evidenced as these ones are able to bridge the gap of development initially present from the larger ones. In perspective such results would demonstrate that a further space exist for the lowering of transplant cost.
