Abstract in English: Miscanthus, evaluation of the adaptability of the
crop in central Italy. Experimental plantation at the CRA-ING.
Miscanthus x giganteus (Miscanthus) is a perennial rizhomatous
grass which has received particular attention during the last
decade as energy crop. The experiments carried out so far relegate
the area of cultivation to northern Europe. The lack of data
regarding the presence of this species in the areal potentially
productive of central Italy prompted us to study its behaviour.
The Consiglio per la ricerca e la sperimentazione in agricoltura,
Unità di ricerca per l’ingegneria agraria (CRA-ING) has established
a Miscanthus cultivation (1,600 m2) in order to evaluate
the adaptability of the crop to the soil and climate conditions
in the areas of Central Italy. The plantation will be used also
for testing the prototypes and the machines developed by the
Institute and aimed at fostering the mechanization of crop. A
comparison among rhizomes with less or more than 5 buds has
been carried out. For each class, fifty rhizomes were chosen and
the plants derived analysed. The preliminary data on rhizome
viability and strength (percentage of germination and number
of stem per m-2) 30 days after transplant, seem to confirm that
the presence of a main and at least two secondary buds is the
most important requirement in order to assure the successful
plantation. Moreover, despite the opinions on Miscanthus frugalness,
the crop benefits when the specific agronomic conditions
are guaranteed. |
