Adaptive BREEDING for productive, sustainable and resilient FORESTs under climate change
|B4EST focuses on eight of the most economically, ecologically and socially important tree species in Europe, covering a wide range of current and potential habitats, industrial uses and societal values. The three broadleaf (hardwood) and five conifer (softwood) species will be studied at different intensity levels to address relevant scientific and technological questions.
Proposal will aim to identify/develop genotypes with appropriate adaptation profiles for extension/change of tree species range, both vertically and horizontally, including those genotypes with potential for use on marginal land.B4EST will: 1) identify new genetic variation with appropriate adaptation profiles (resistance to biotic and abioticstress, suitable for traditional forest and marginal lands, etc.), 2) integrate them into current and new breedingprogrammes, and 3) enlarge the genetic diversity present in the European register of FRM with new elite genotypes. This will be done using a large network of available European common gardens, genomicresources and accumulated information from advanced breeding programmes and previous EU projects. From research on adaptation and reaction norms of current and newly-developed breeding materials to applied outcomes such as vulnerability and risk maps, and clear guidelines and recommendations, B4EST will match the already available and newly identified forest genetic resources to the environments where they will perform best. More resilient FRM will be developed and integrated with deployment recommendations to be rapidly adopted by national policy development and implemented by forest managers and industry, and will also be subject to economic and environmental evaluation.
