This Department handles the sustainable management and conservation of Italy’s ecosystems, forests, and agricultural land. In compliance with international agreements on the environment, the department’s main research activities include studying sustainable management, seen as biological system efficiency, with the goals of safeguarding environmental quality and assets, and exploring biodiversity.

Biodiversity is to be understood not only as protecting individual species, but also as conserving ecosystems, their proper functioning, and the processes occurring among the components contained therein. In the area of global environmental change, the department’s research projects are designed to increase know-how on climate change mitigation and the agro-forestry systems’ adaptation to the decreasing environmental impact on land and water resources, through the study of innovative techniques and cultivation systems that favor an increase in agricultural production.

Main areas of research and experimentation:

  • analyzing and categorizing land;

  • protecting and conserving the soil, including through the proper management and improvement of ecosystems and agro-forestry land in order to prevent natural disasters caused by climate changes;

  • assessing and increasing the biodiversity (plant, animal, and microbiological) of agro-forestry systems, and studying environmental quality;

  • agricultural engineering for the management of soil and agro-forestry systems, with particular focus on reducing impact on the ground’s carbon-storing capacity, as well as on increasing energetic and economic efficiency;

  • mechanization for plant and animal production businesses and their initial transformations; machinery and systems for product transformation; certification of agricultural machinery;

  • monitoring and inventory of ecological/forestry resources for the purpose of sustainable management, in line with international agreements on the environment;

  • agrometeorology and forecasting the climate’s impact on agro-forestry ecosystems;

  • developing “green technology” in order to revive degraded environments and fight against desertification;

  • studying wood production for industrial purposes (wood, paper, energy), in order to safeguard the landscape/environment, including through phytodepuration and phytoremediation;

  • producing and transforming biomass for energy and industry; developing renewable energy sources;

  • applications in optical, electronic, and physical techniques providing rapid, non-destructive measures to support research;

  • integrated management of water resources and land fertility with regard to the Mediterranean area.
