Origins

The Research unit for swine husbandry (CRA-SUI) is located in the Po Valley, where some among the most famous Italian PDO foods (i.e., food specialties with Protected Designation of Origin), such as Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano-Reggiano, were developed.

The Husbandry Experimental Institute of Modena was established in 1925 with the goal of studying different local, national and foreign races of animals for research and selection purposes, and of promoting local and regional animal husbandry. In 1967 it merged with the Husbandry Experimental Institute of Rome. In 2006 it was converted to Research unit for swine husbandry (CRA-SUI), within the framework of the Italian Agricultural Research Council.

From its origin up to the ‘80s it carried out research activities on dairy, beef  swine and poultry production as well as on Parmigiano Reggiano production. In the following years research was focused on the Italian heavy pig production. More recently the research topics were extended to animal waste exploitation for agricultural and energy production purposes, as a consequence of new knowledge acquired in the agricultural sector.

Aims

The CRA-SUI research unit studies the influence of rearing methods and nutrition on production efficiency, animal welfare, and quality characteristics of the pig carcasses, meat and fat deposits, either for fresh human consumption or for food processing. It evaluates the influence of the rearing factors on their environmental impact, and pursues the exploitation of pig slurry and manure for agricultural and non agricultural purposes. Research is carried out according to intensive as well as to organic or outdoor pig husbandry models.

Activities

 RESEARCH THEMES

Pig production and nutrition:

- heavy-pig feeding and pork quality;

- rearing and feeding effects on the biochemical and functional characteristics of fresh pork devoted to the production of typical foods;

- reduction in N excretion through the diet;

- amino acid requirements of heavy pig;

- outdoor and organic pig husbandry;

- utilization of biodiesel by-products for pig feeding;

- piglet castration.

Manure and slurries exploitation:

This research theme is carried out by researchers coming from the agronomy sector and includes the following topics:

- effects on crop productivity and environmental quality of agricultural utilization of untransformed or processed livestock effluents;

- energy production from livestock effluents;

- transition processes, i.e. farming transition toward a post fossil-fuel based food system.
