With the D.P.R. n. 1318, issued on 23th November 1967, it was established the Experimental Institute for Silviculture of IRSA (Research Organization of  Agriculture and Forests Ministry) with headquarter to Arezzo (Tuscany, Central Italy) and the three Peripheral Operational Section in Florence, S. Pietro Avellana and Cosenza.

In 2007, with the re-organization of the Agricultural Research Council (CRA) the Experimental Institute for Silviculture, Section of Cosenza, was turned into Mediterranean Forestry Research Unit.

Presently, the headquarter of CRA-SAM is located in Rende (Province of Cosenza).

Aims

 

Activities

Ecological characterization of the forestry environment with regard to sustainable production, climatic change, modifications in use and conservation, and global warming.


Development of models for the optimization of sustainable forest management and multi-use of forest systems.

 

Protection against fire: characterization of fuels, modeling and prediction of fire, preventive silviculture, regeneration after forest fires.

 

Arboriculture for quality and quantity wood production

 

Characterization and propagation of reproductive forest material.

Calibration of models to predict merchantable volume and lignocellulosic biomass of tree in plantations and natural forests.
